5 Surprising Changes to Make Your Backyard Beautiful

Everyone wants to have a beautiful backyard where they can entertain their friends and family and where the kids can have a good time. To get this kind of backyard takes time, planning and effort. There are many things you might do to spruce things up or add interest to your yard, but the following five changes can make your backyard something special.

1. Water Garden

A great way to really transform your yard is to add a water garden. Instead of a flat an uninteresting green lawn, you can install a watercourse of rocks and little waterfalls that will add both visual and auditory beauty. Water lilies and other plants can give the water garden a lush, tropical appearance. Including a bench or two can also make the water garden the perfect spot to relax and read a book.

2. Vegetable Garden

Another way you can add interest your backyard is to put in a garden. This garden does not have to be large (unless you have a very large backyard). A few well-organized plants, such as tomatoes, lettuce or corn, can liven things up. Of course, you should make sure you choose plants that will grow well in your location. You should also have the county check your soil so you will know if it is suitable as it is, or if you will need to add nutrients to the soil.

3. Solar Lights

When night falls, many people abandon their backyards and head inside. While this can be addressed using lights, many people are reluctant to waste the energy and money necessary to light their yard. However, solar powered lights make it easy to light your yard while saving money. Placed around benches, gazebos or along paths, these lights will absorb the sun’s rays during the day and release light for many hours during the night.

4. Cleaning and Organizing

Yes, it may seem obvious, but cleaning and organizing your yard can have a surprising effect on its appearance. Often, we get so used to how a backyard looks that we do not even notice that it is not as clean or as organized as it could be. There are several things you can do.

    • Trim hedges, bushes and trees
    • Cut any weeds or non-decorative vines
    • Thoroughly rake the entire yard
    • Place all large pieces of outdoor exercise equipment, such as children’s swings, monkey bars or trampolines in the same part of the yard
    • Place all tools in a tool shed out of sight

5. Tree House

If you have kids, or even if you do not, a tree house can be a great addition to your backyard. For the kids, it can be a place for play and getting together with friends in a safe environment. From a decorative standpoint, a tree house gives a backyard a charming old-fashioned feel. There are several things to consider when building a tree house.

    • Can the tree you have chosen support the weight of the tree house and the children?
    • Will you use a pre-made kit or work from scratch using plans?
    • Do you want to include electricity so there can be a light at night?
    • The tree house should be very sturdy and should have railings or walls on every side
    • The ladder to the tree house should be fixed in place and very sturdy

Getting your backyard in great shape can make it more enjoyable for you and your family. It also adds to the value of your home, since no one wants a house with an ugly or boring backyard.
