Home Maintenance To-Do List for Spring

When the spring comes around, the good weather brings excitement and anticipation. We’re all anxious to get outside and have some fun. While the springtime is definitely a cause for celebration, it’s also time to get some work done. If you’re a home owner, there are some very important maintenance tasks you should complete this season to keep your home in tip-top shape.

Air Conditioning

Very soon you’re going to want to turn on the air conditioning in your home, so make sure your unit is working properly. Hire a HVAC contractor to come to your home and give your A/C a tune-up. You can also clean out the condensate drain hose yourself, and clean off the outdoor condenser with a hose after disconnecting the power.

House Paint

Now is a good time to do any repainting or touch-ups that are needed on the outside of your home to keep it looking its best. It’s also time for power-washing if needed.

Outside Deck

If you have an outside deck or patio, you’re going to be spending a lot more time on it in the upcoming months. Wooden decks should be resealed and/or painted if necessary, and check for any splintered wood that needs repair. If you have a concrete patio, check for and fill in any cracks. Give your deck a good power-washing, too.

Roof and Gutters

Now that the leaves are done falling, you’ll want to clean out any debris from the rain gutters on your roof. While you’re at it, inspect the roof for any winter damage. If you need to replace any shingles, do so now. Call a contractor if you have any leaks that need to be fixed.

Garden and Yard

Finally your flowers and bushes will bloom again, so tidy up your yard and garden. Rake and remove weeds, and prune your shrubs. Put down mulch and/or fertilizer, and plant some new foliage if you’d like. If any trees have become overgrown or broken, cut them back.

Spring Cleaning

Give the inside of your home a thorough and complete cleaning from floor to ceiling. Make sure to clean the inside and outsides of your windows and dust off your fans.

Attic

If you have an attic, check for leaks or moisture, which could lead to a mold problem. If you have a lot of mold, it’s a good idea to hire a professional to do the cleaning and eradicating. Also hire a contractor if you need to install any insulation.

Tips for Accomplishing It All

These jobs seem like a lot of work because sometimes they can be. To get it all done this year, set aside some specific time to do it, and see how much you can do in one home maintenance weekend. The most important thing is to stay on top of these things throughout the years. A little slacking this year could mean expensive repairs the next. Enlist the help of family members or friends when you need it, and when it’s all done, relax and enjoy the peace of mind.
